Brazil Ruling Closes Eight Dams After Disastrous Mine Breach

A Brazilian court has ordered Vale SA to halt operations at eight dams linked to iron ore mining after 134 deaths resulted from a recent tailings dam disaster. The ruling will slash one of the world’s biggest iron ore producer’s output by 7.5 percent.

A judge on the 22nd regional court in Belo Horizonte—the capital of Minas Gerais state where the disaster occurred—issued the order that halted operations at those dams on Feb. 1, Leticia Lima, a court spokeswoman, told Bloomberg Environment Feb. 5.
