California Politicians Push Green New Deal for Climate Change

Fourteen Democrats in the California Assembly released a bill on the first day of the 2020 legislature that would accelerate clean energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction goals, while also cutting homelessness in half and increasing affordable housing stock.

Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D) said Jan. 6 that his Green New Deal bill would tackle climate change—something that can’t happen effectively without also addressing equity issues in minority and disadvantaged communities.

“The damage of the climate crisis is limitless,” Bonta said during a news conference in Sacramento, adding that government needs to do more, act faster, and be more aggressive.
