Canada Charges Volkswagen With Contravening Environmental Law

Canada charged Volkswagen AG with 60 counts of “contravening the Canadian Environmental Protection Act,” according to a statement from the government.

  • Charges include 58 counts of contravening act between Jan. 2008 and Dec. 2015
  • Court appearance scheduled for Dec. 13 in Ontario
  • Government started investigation in 2015 into imports of vehicles allegedly equipped with prohibited “defeat device,” or software that reduces the effectiveness of the emission control system during normal vehicle operation and use
  • Company also charged with 2 counts of providing misleading information
