Coal Plant Closure Could Boost Gas, Solar in New Mexico

An investor-owned utility in New Mexico is asking regulators to abandon its coal plant in the northwestern part of the state in favor of natural gas, solar resources, and battery storage.

The application filed July 1 by Public Service Company of New Mexico, a subsidiary of PNM Resources, Inc., gives an early look at how the company wants to replace power from the San Juan Generating Station after its planned retirement in 2022 when supply agreements end. PNM plans to exit from coal completely about a decade afterward.
