National laboratory scientists are are envisioning a future in which electric airplanes ply the skies and large batteries enable full electrification of the U.S. transportation system, which will help the country decarbonize to address climate change.

Today’s early but rapidly advancing energy storage technology will allow for powerful batteries that will allow electric air taxis to whisk commuters to work, possibly as early as 2025, George Crabtree, director of the Argonne National Laboratory Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, said June 4 in testimony before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
