Ex-Mine Cleanup Chief Presses for Funding for Water Treatment

The former official who led President Barack Obama’s mine cleanup work is now trying to direct federal dollars toward water treatment projects that he says are currently funded by “bake sales and raffles.”

Under the plan being pitched to lawmakers by Joe Pizarchik, former director of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), $115 million would be steered away from a pilot cleanup program and toward “passive” water treatment projects across the country.
