‘Forever Chemicals’ Testing Could Be Ordered in California

A bill that would allow California officials to order water districts to test for “forever chemicals” is heading to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) for a signature or veto.

California’s Assembly cleared a bill July 8 that would give the State Water Resources Control Board the power to order multiple water districts to test for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, a family of thousands of chemicals that have been linked to developmental issues in children, thyroid problems, and other ill health effects.
