Gas From Green Sources Seen Key for Clean Energy Shift in Europe

Combining hydrogen and biomethane with electricity is the most cost-effective way for Europe to switch to a fully renewable energy system, a group of gas infrastructure companies said.

Using green hydrogen and renewable methane could reduce energy system costs by 217 billion euros ($246 billion) a year by 2050 compared to a scenario where gas use is cut to a minimum to lower emissions, according to a study for Gas for Climate, a group of nine companies including Italy’s Snam SpA, Enagas SA of Spain, and NV Nederlandse Gasunie.
