Hike Real Estate Taxes for Climate Help, Massachusetts’ Baker Says

A hike in Massachusetts’ real estate taxes is needed to help the state combat climate change’s effects, Gov. Charlie Baker (R) said Jan. 18.

Baker will officially propose an increase in the real estate excise tax by Jan. 23 when he delivers his budget proposal to lawmakers. His proposal comes as Massachusetts and other coastal states are growing increasingly concerned about the potential damage to oceanside communities from worsening storms and sea level rise due to climate change.

Massachusetts has already spent $600 million to shore up Boston piers and towns’ sea walls as well as build coastal barriers....
