House Panel Approves Yucca Mountain Bill Despite Opposition

A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee advanced legislation to reopen a controversial project to permanently store nuclear waste in the Nevadan desert while developing other sites in the interim.

H.R. 2699, a measure from Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) and Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.), would restart the process of studying Nevada’s Yucca Mountain as a nuclear waste repository, while considering two other remote sites for waste storage until the repository is built.
