Lawmakers Start Bid to Continue Mine Cleanup Fund

A bipartisan pair of Pennsylvania members of Congress will introduce legislation Sept. 9 that would extend a fee on coal production to pay for cleaning up the nation’s abandoned mines.

The fee is set to expire in 2021. Under the bill to be brought forward by Reps. Glenn Thompson (R-Pa.) and Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.), the fee would be extended through 2036. The legislation is the first congressional effort to continue the fund before the 2021 expiration.
