Loopholes Undercut EU Energy Efficiency Appliance Goals

Up to one in four washing machines, refrigerators, and other appliances for sale in the European Union don’t meet the bloc’s ecodesign standards, the European Court of Auditors said.

Noncompliance is encouraged by weak market surveillance and leads to overestimates of the environmental benefits of the EU’s ecodesign framework, the auditors said in Wednesday’s report.

Ecodesign, or the setting of energy and raw materials consumption standards for products, is generally seen as a successful EU environmental policy. Ecodesign measures since the 1990s are credited with cutting total EU energy consumption by about 9%, the auditors’ report said.
