N.Y. Power Grid Faces Hurdles to Meet Climate Goals

New York’s power grid operator is on board with policy makers’ plans to address climate change and looking for how to overcome hurdles to meet the more aggressive goals.

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) in its annual “Power Trends” report on May 2 said the challenges include the need to update and replace aging generation infrastructure, find more efficient ways to integrate intermittent resources like wind and solar, and make energy storage cheaper and more effective.

New York also has a somewhat unique transmission challenge, which the report refers to as the “tale of two grids.”...
