Oregon Aluminum Recycler Facing Record Air Quality Fine

A U.S. subsidiary of Norsk Hydro ASA was fined $1.3 million for allegedly melting contaminated aluminum scrap at its facility in The Dalles, Ore., in violation of its air quality permit.

The civil penalty against Hydro Extrusion USA LLC for multiple permit violations is the largest air quality fine ever imposed by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.

“DEQ found Hydro Extrusion operated with flagrant disregard for the rules and conditions of its air quality permit,” Kieran O’Donnell, DEQ compliance and enforcement manager, said in the statement.
