Outdoor Ban on Two Types of Pesticides Proposed in Canada

Harm to aquatic insects has spurred Canada to propose a full outdoor ban for a family of pesticides, instead of a partial one proposed earlier this year.

A gradual ban of all outdoor agricultural and turf uses of clothianidin, as well as all outdoor agricultural and ornamental uses for thiamethoxam, will supersede a ban on only some uses proposed in May if left unchanged after a consultation period, Andre Gagnon, a Health Canada spokesperson, said in an email to Bloomberg Environment Aug. 16.

The pesticides could still be used indoors at greenhouses and nurseries....
