Seismic Testing Permits Halted by Federal Judge Due to Shutdown

Federal regulators can’t issue permits for seismic testing off the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast coast during the government shutdown, a U.S. district court said Jan. 18.

The U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina order said that, if permits are issued during the current shutdown, then five companies seeking to conduct seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean could start those activities without an adequate legal review of potential harm.

Environmental groups sued over the activity in December, and a separate complaint was filed by coastal municipalities and businesses in South Carolina. The cases were combined and a number...
