South Carolina Can Advance Challenge to Atlantic Oil Drilling

South Carolina can move forward with a lawsuit that seeks to block oil exploration in the Atlantic Ocean, after a federal court rebuffed the Trump administration’s bid to derail the case.

The U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina on Tuesday rejected the federal government’s motion to dismiss the state’s core claims against permits for seismic testing to assess oil and gas reserves off the East Coast.

Judge Richard M. Gergel agreed to toss South Carolina’s nuisance, trespass, and admiralty claims, but left other key arguments intact, including South Carolina’s challenge to President Donald Trump’s 2017 executive order...
