To Boost GMO Crops, Feds Developing Updated Biotech Crop Rules

A federal push to streamline rules on agricultural biotech products will be an opportunity to address advances in genetically engineered plants, but it should carefully navigate the stigma associated with GMOs, government officials said.

The three U.S. agencies with regulatory jurisdiction over agricultural biotechnology—the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture—have 180 days to identify ways to simplify their regulations and design a plan for an online system for companies to submit biotech approval requests.
