Vale Appeals Latest Stop-Work Order at Brazil Nickel Mine

Mining giant Vale SA will appeal the latest court ruling ordering the firm to halt operations at its Onca Puma nickel mine and ferronickel plant until it complies with its environmental permit, the company said March 5.

Vale has until March 8 to cease operations, under a A Feb. 26 order from Judge Antonio Souza Prudente of the First Regional Federal Tribunal (TRF1), a Brasilia-based appeals court.

In 2015, 2017, and 2018, Vale successfully appealed earlier decisions by the court to shut down Onca Puma operations for permit violations.
