Mining giant Vale SA asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help improve the safety of all the company’s tailings dams after a deadly rupture last month.
Vale asked the Corps, which licenses all U.S. dams, to review all of the company’s tailings dam processes and to help improve Brazil’s mining code, Fabio Schvartsman, chief executive officer of Vale, told Brazilian legislators Feb. 14, Vale said in a statement to Bloomberg Environment.
One mining authority in Minas Gerais state who visited the site of the collapse welcomed Vale’s request for assistance from the Corps.
